FAQs

Syncing

How can I clip more recipes and sync more often?

If you have 15 recipes and you haven’t created a ChefTap Basic account yet, open ChefTap to the main recipe list on your device and swipe the screen to the right. Then tap the ‘Register’ button and fill out the the form that follows. After you register for an account, we’ll send you an activation email with a link to click on. Open the email and click the link to activate your account. After you activate your account, sign into the app and you’ll get space for another 85 recipes.

If you have a Basic account and have 100 recipes, you’ll need a ChefTap Pro account to clip more recipes. First, sign into your cheftap.com account. Then, at the top of the screen, click Settings, and then Subscription.  From there, you can follow the instructions to subscribe ChefTap Pro and receive unlimited syncing, unlimited recipes, and more.

How do I reset my password?

You can reset your password by following this link and filling out the form on that page. We’ll send you an email with a link to reset your password. If the link we send you does not work from your mobile device, try clicking it on a desktop/laptop computer.

How do I change my email address?

To change your registered email address, first sign into your cheftap.com account by clicking here. After you’ve signed into your account, click ‘Settings’ at the top of the page.

On the Settings page, enter your password in the text box at the top of the screen and then enter your new email address in the line below that. Then click ‘Save Changes’.

How do I add a new device?

  1. In the ChefTap app, open your pullout menu by swiping the screen to the right and then tap on the Sign In button.
Note (Android): If you don’t see the Sign In button, you may not have the required version of Android.
  2. If you have just installed ChefTap, delete the five starter recipes.
  3. Use your same username and password to sign in on all of your devices, as well as at cheftap.com. If you’ve forgotten your password, click here.
  4. If you have a lot of recipes, it will take a while to download all of your recipes. Your device must stay connected to the internet while recipes download. To keep your device awake, leave a recipe open while your recipes download.

How do I set up an account?

Use the app to set up accounts. At present, this can’t be done from the website.

  1. Open the ChefTap app and swipe your recipe list to the right.

  6. Use your same username and password to sign in on all of your devices, as well as at cheftap.com. If you’ve forgotten your password, click here.

Why does syncing sometimes undo my edits?

Here’s how syncing works. During a sync, your device compares the ‘last modified’ date of the server’s version of a recipe against the ‘last modified’ date of the same recipe on your device. The version with the most recent ‘last modified’ date wins. This means that if you edit a recipe on cheftap.com and then edit the same recipe on your device, the version of the recipe on your device will overwrite the edits made to that recipe on cheftap.com.

The things that update the ‘last modified’ date on a recipe are:

  • Editing the text of the recipe
  • Editing the title of a recipe
  • Adding or removing pictures attached to a recipe
  • Adding or removing a recipe from the Make list
  • Adding or removing a recipe as a favorite
  • Adding or removing tags on a recipe

If you’re unsure as to whether the version of a recipe is the latest version, make that recipe a favorite and then undo it, then sync.

What if I have the same recipe on two devices and I sync?

If you have added the same recipe to two devices independently, you can sync your devices without ending up with multiple copies.

  • If a duplicate recipe is detected, the server’s version is used. A recipe is considered a duplicate only if the text of the recipe is identical to one on the server.
  • If you’ve tweaked a recipe on one device and not the other, then you will end up with two versions of the same recipe. We decided to err on the side of not losing data.
  • In general, if there’s a change of a recipe on the device and the server, the server wins and the changes on the device are overwritten.

What are the device and browser requirements?

Android
Your device(s) must be running Android version 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to use syncing.  First-generation Kindle Fires are not supported, because they run an older version of Android.

If you have an older version of Android, you will be able to keep an older version of ChefTap that does not allow syncing.

iOS

You must have iOS 8 or greater to use ChefTap.

Browsers
We support the following browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Safari
  • Firefox
  • Internet Explorer 9 and greater

Upgrading your browser is free.  You can see options for upgrading at Browse Happy.

When I sync recipes, the sync doesn’t complete.

The most common reason that syncs do not complete is that the internet connection is lost during the sync. Some devices will turn off WiFi when the device goes to sleep. You might also lose your connection if you are using a mobile hotspot.

You can keep your device from sleeping during a sync by opening a recipe. By default, your device will stay awake while you are viewing a recipe.

How do I sync between my devices and the website?

First, you will need a ChefTap account:

  1. Set up an account from your device. Open the slide-out menu and tap Register.
  2. Fill out the New Account form.
  3. You will receive an activation email at the email address that you provide.  Click on the link in the email to activate your account.
  4. Log into your new account on all of your devices. Open the slide-out menu and tap Log In. If you’ve forgotten your password, click here.

Sync your Recipes:

  • If you have a free account, you can sync your devices with the website once a week.
  • If you have a ChefTap Pro account, you can sync as often as you like. In addition, changes to your recipes will automatically be pushed out to all of your devices.

From your device:
Open the slideout menu and tap Sync.

From your desktop:
If you have a Pro account, you can click the Sync button at the top of the recipe list.

How does device syncing work with a free account?

With a free account, you can sync your device with the web site once a week.

If you have two devices, you can sync each of them with the website once a week. Changes are not automatically pushed out to all of your devices — that’s a Pro feature.

However, if you sync your devices with the web site, your recipes will eventually make it out to all of your devices. For example, if you sync your phone with the website, your phone recipes will be on the website. Then, when you sync your tablet with the website, the recipes from your phone will make their way to your tablet.

If you have a Pro account, you can sync your devices with the website as often as you like. Changes are then pushed out to all of your devices.

I did a sync and there are different recipes on my devices and web account.

If you have a free account, you can sync each device with the website once a week.  Changes are not automatically pushed out to all devices — that’s a Pro feature.

If you sync two devices with the website, all of your recipes will be on the website.  Recipes will find their way to other devices the next time you sync with the website.

You should also make sure you don’t have a current search running. If you’re running ChefTap on iOS, look for the funnel icon at the top of the recipe list that looks like this:

ios-filter

Tap this button and then tap ‘Clear All’ button to clear the search and display all of your recipes.

If you’re using ChefTap on an Android, Kindle Fire, or Nook HD, the search bar will look like this:

To clear the search, tap the large white X on the right-hand side of the search bar to clear the search and display all of your recipes.
